Understanding TIIE (Tasa de Interés Interbancaria de Equilibrio)
The TIIE is Mexico’s benchmark interbank interest rate, published daily by the Bank of Mexico (Banxico). It represents the average rate at which banks lend money to one another and serves as the foundation for determining most lending rates across the country. When you obtain financing in Mexico, your rate is often expressed as “TIIE + spread,” where the spread depends on your credit profile, loan term, and collateral. A lower spread reflects stronger financial standing and better negotiated terms. For reference, the TIIE in Mexico plays a similar role to the Federal Funds Rate in the United States — both serve as the baseline interest rate from which banks determine the cost of borrowing. However, while the Federal Funds Rate is a policy target set by the Federal Reserve, the TIIE is a market-driven rate based on actual interbank transactions, making it a transparent indicator of Mexico’s financial environment. Understanding the TIIE allows clients to compare loan offers accurately, negotiate better terms, and recognize opportunities to refinance when market conditions improve.
